I'm so tired my eyes hurt. It was really F'n cold. Snowing hard at the start. Any sane race official would have at the very least shortened the race (which I was banking on by the way...)
Everyone went extremely hard out of the start down the decent. I guess they thought they would warm up that way?!? I almost crashed 100 meters into the race when I got caught in a groove in between the yellow lines..Fingers and face got cold real quick down the decent. Hardly trusted my hands to break for me. I had some serious mental battles today (why am I doing this?)
It became quickly apparent that I wouldn't be going on A-tack today. I felt fine up the climbs during laps 1 and 2 but I could feel my fuse getting shorter. I forgot my GU flask in the car so my food supply was limited. By lap three I could feel my legs starting to shut down up the climb. There were 2 small groups off the front. I made it to the feed zone with what was left of the pack only to get gaped by an acceleration. I chased like a possessed retard to catch back on before the last 100 meter pitch before the long decent. Got dropped again before the decent. I could have held a conversation but I had absolutely nothing left in my legs. By some miracle (or curse) I caught back on during the long decent. I accomplished this by riding hard for 15 seconds resting for 15 seconds hard for 15 seconds rest for 15 seconds at nausium until I finally made contact. At this point in the race there were 10ish people left in the pack... Here the highlight of the race commenced when I was at the back of the pack chatting it up with Floyd explaining to him what a sorry situation I was in. I milked a ride with the goupo until we turned onto the old highway rode portion of the final climb at which point my tendons felt like they were tearing with each peddle stroke. I rode solo into the finish at 220 watts to bag maybe 20-25th place. What a miserable experience. Kam you better find this data useful!
Ok I go crawl into bed, lay in the fetal position and cry myself to sleep. You San Diegans are crazy!
What's incredible is not only did Orion finish one of the toughest road races in SoCal, he did it with wind and snow at the start in the Cat1,2 field where it's not only nearly 100 miles of racing - you're either going up a giant climb or a 55mph bone chilling decent... all that after just a few days before doing a full HyperPower "Kamster Hamster" Session... This sign says it all... http://velonews.com/photo/87405 - Hey wait isn't that Orion in there diggin' deep? http://velonews.com/photo/87426
Orion that was impressive - GREAT JOB! CU Wednesday for Session 4... bring your extra set of legs...
